A cannabis chillum is a small, straight, tube-shaped hand pipe that you load at one end and draw from the other. It has no bowl piece, no carburetor, and no moving parts, so it is about as simple as a pipe gets. People reach for one because it fits in a pocket, loads in seconds, and needs very little upkeep.
Key Features
- Straight-through tube design with no separate bowl or carb
- Compact size, usually two to four inches long
- Packed at the tip and held between the fingers while drawing
- Works with ground flower, including CBD flower and herbal blends
- One-piece build means no screens, gaskets, or parts to lose
- Quick to clean with a short soak and a pipe brush
- Offered in glass, metal, silicone, ceramic, and wood
Materials and Specs
Most chillums are made from borosilicate glass, which handles heat well and rinses clean. Metal versions in aluminum or stainless steel are the sturdiest choice for travel, silicone models survive drops and flex in a bag, and ceramic or wood pieces are picked for their look and hand feel. Length typically runs between two and four inches, and the bore is wide enough to draw without effort. Glass is the heaviest option and can chip on hard surfaces, while metal warms up faster in the hand. A removable screen or a small glass screen is often used to keep fine-ground material from pulling through.
How Do You Use a Chillum?
Grind your material, fill the tip loosely, and hold the pipe at a slight upward angle so gravity keeps everything in place. Light the end, draw gently, and tamp the top down as it burns.
Is a Chillum the Same as a One-Hitter?
They are close cousins but not identical. A one-hitter usually refers to a narrow bat-style pipe with a small bowl at one end, while a chillum is a straight tube held vertically between the fingers.
How Do You Clean a Chillum?
Soak it in isopropyl alcohol for about fifteen minutes, scrub the inside with a pipe brush or a cotton swab, then rinse with warm water and let it air dry completely.
